The third season of Shangri-La Frontier will begin broadcasting on January 10, 2027. According to an announcement on the anime's official website, the new season is scheduled to run for two consecutive cours, a common twelve-week broadcast structure for television anime.
A new key visual was released alongside the premiere date confirmation. The visual teases the upcoming Galaxia Heroes: Chaos action storyline, which was previously highlighted in a promotional trailer. Studio C2C will return to handle the animation production.
Production Team and Broadcast History
Toshiyuki Kubooka is returning to direct the sequel. The core production staff from the previous seasons is also set to return, including character designer and chief animation director Ayumi Kurashima and series composer Kazuyuki Fudeyasu. The music will once again be composed by the trio of Keiichi Hirokawa, Ryuichi Takada, and Kuniyuki Takahashi.
The franchise follows a consistent release pattern. The first season aired for two consecutive cours from October 2022 to March 2023. The second season then ran from October 2023 to March 2024. The announcement for this third season and a related game adaptation was made immediately following the second season's finale.
Voice Cast and Story
The main voice cast is confirmed to reprise their roles. The cast includes Yuma Uchida as protagonist Rakuro Hizutome (Sunraku) and Azumi Waki as Rei Saiga (Psyger-0). They are joined by Yoko Hikasa as Towa Amane (Arthur Pencilgon), Makoto Koichi as Kei Uomi (Oicazzo), Rina Hidaka as Emul, and Akio Otsuka as Vysache.
The second season introduced several new characters through major story arcs. These included the Nephilim Hollow Arc, featuring Rie Takahashi as Rust and Kaito Ishikawa as Mordo, and the Abyss City Arc, featuring Aki Kanada as Stude and Toru Sakurai as Araba.
The story follows Rakuro Hizutome, a gamer who goes by the name Sunraku and specializes in completing poorly made 'shitty games.' His journey changes when he starts playing the acclaimed virtual reality game Shangri-La Frontier, where he meets old friends and seeks to conquer the game's greatest challenges.
Source Material and Publication
The anime is based on the manga by artist Ryosuke Fuji and writer Katarina, which itself adapts Katarina's web novel. The original web novel has been serialized on the Shosetsuka ni Naro website since May 2017. The manga adaptation is published in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine, a weekly anthology magazine first created in 1959 that targets a shonen demographic. The English release is licensed by Kodansha USA, an imprint of the Japanese publishing giant Kodansha, which was founded in 1910.
