One Piece Anime Shifts to 26 Episodes Per Year in 2026
Toei Animation confirmed the One Piece anime will air a maximum of 26 episodes annually starting in 2026, beginning with the Elbaf arc.
The One Piece anime will air no more than 26 episodes per year beginning in 2026, starting with the Elbaf arc in April 2026. Toei Animation and producer Ryūta Koike announced this major format shift in October 2025, moving the long-running series from a weekly to a seasonal release model.
The anime returned in April 2026 for the first of two cours with the start of the new Elbaf arc. The arc debuted in Japan on April 5 and is being streamed internationally by Crunchyroll. This change follows a three-month production hiatus from January to March 2026, which occurred after the conclusion of the Egghead arc.
Context and Production Shift
Historically, the One Piece anime has aired most weeks since its premiere in 1999. The pace of adaptation has slowed considerably over the years. The new seasonal strategy, implemented in 2026, aims to improve pacing, eliminate filler, and stay more faithful to the source material.
According to Toei Animation, the schedule allows episodes to incorporate more of the manga's content, tempo, and pacing while continuing to leverage the unique storytelling possible with animation. During a program on the official ONE PIECE YouTube channel, the team announced that recap episodes would be dropped beginning in 2026. Ryuta Koike stated that viewers wanted the main story to continue without recaps, so the team decided to air new story content every week during each broadcast run.
Koike offered an apology for reducing the number of episodes but explained there was a very important reason behind the decision. He said the 26-episode annual cap was designed to align the anime with a one-manga-chapter-per-episode format. The goal is to strengthen the production structure, dive deeper into the ONE PIECE world, and deliver the story in a more concentrated format. Former Weekly Shonen Jump editor-in-chief Hiroyuki Nakano had questioned whether high production quality had stretched the budget, but Koike denied that budget strain was the reason for reducing episodes.
Current Arc Progress
The Elbaf arc is now underway. In 2026 and 2027, the first two One Piece seasons were released under the new seasonal structure. Episode 1180, which aired on September 27, 2026, marked an important point in the arc's development and ended on a cliffhanger. Toei Animation confirmed via social media that this episode marked the end of the summer season.
The anime will now take a major break after episode 1180. The official ONE PIECE X account posted a message thanking fans for watching the final episode of the TV anime this year and stating the next episode would air in 2027. Episode 1181 is expected to premiere next year. If the anime resumes as it did previously, it could return as early as April 2028. The break is expected to disappoint a large portion of the community, especially as the anime is at a key point in the Elbaf arc where the Straw Hats are fighting against the Holy Knights, Gunko remembers a connection to Brook, and King Imu has made his first move, showing immense power.

Alongside the main anime's new schedule, several other major One Piece projects are on the horizon. Wit Studio will release a remake titled The One Piece in February 2028. This remake will readapt the first arc with better animation and narrative changes, featuring fewer episodes and pacing closer to the original manga. The animation studio justified the project as a new entry point for fans.
The One Piece: God Valley movie will be released in Japanese theaters in summer 2027. It is the first movie connected to the anime and canonically expands the story, though no information is available about an international release.
Also, the third season of the One Piece live-action series will premiere on Netflix in early 2028. The series stars Emily Rudd, Iñaki Godoy, Mackenyu, Taz Skylar, and Lera Abova.
