Witch Hat Atelier Manga One-Third Complete

Creator Kamome Shirahama estimates the Witch Hat Atelier manga is about one-third of the way through its complete story. She revealed this in a July 5, 2026, interview with Anime Corner, stating the narrative has moved past a significant turning point.

Shirahama explained that the foundational world-building phase of the story is now complete. The manga, which began serialization in Kodansha's Morning Two magazine in July 2016, has published 98 full chapters. When counting partial chapters individually, the total reaches 164.

Story Progress and Planning

Shirahama provided a cautious estimate on the series' length. She said it is maybe about a third of the way into the story, but it is really difficult to say. She confirmed the story has hit a major turning point with the Silver Eve arc, a milestone she had previously referenced as early as 2024.

The creator has the overarching plot planned out. However, the finer details are not fixed in advance. Shirahama explained she has the broad strokes of the story planned out and that has been decided, but she does not really know the small details of how the story is going to progress.

Character Creation Process

Shirahama also shed light on her character development process. For the cast of Witch Hat Atelier, backstories are created through a mix of pre-planning and organic discovery. She described the balance as about half and half between origins conceived beforehand and those that flow naturally from the narrative's needs.

Publication and Adaptation Status

The interview coincided with ongoing developments for the franchise. The manga is available to read digitally on the K Manga platform. Furthermore, a second season of the anime adaptation was announced in June 2026, complete with a teaser trailer.

In a related interview, the anime's production team hinted at a tonal shift for the future. Producer Hirotsugu Ogo, Director Ayumu Watanabe, and voice actress Rena Motomura suggested the story will grow darker, which influenced the brighter tone of the first season.

Shirahama's comments provide a rare glimpse into the long-term roadmap for the beloved fantasy series. With the world established and a key arc concluded, the journey for Coco and her friends is set to continue for years to come.
