Shigeno's Subaru and Subaru Manga Takes Break Until October

Shuichi Shigeno's street racing manga Subaru and Subaru is going on hiatus. According to an announcement in the 43rd issue of Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine, the series will return in the magazine's 48th issue on October 26.

Kodansha USA Publishing has licensed the manga for English release. The publisher will release the first compiled book volume in English on April 6, 2027.

Story Details

The manga continues the shared storyline established in Shigeno's earlier works, Initial D and MF Ghost. Kodansha USA's description sets the scene. It states the story begins one year after Kanata Rivington, a student of Initial D's Takumi Fujiwara, competed on Japan's MFG street racing circuit. Now, two new drivers aim to enter the event. They are Subaru Sato from Gunma Prefecture and Subaru Kudo from Kanagawa. The series merges the worlds of Initial D and MF Ghost as these two drivers unite.

Publication History

Shigeno launched Subaru and Subaru in Weekly Young Magazine in July 2025. The manga's hiatus is a temporary pause in its serialization.

The creator's influential Initial D manga ran in Young Magazine from 1995 until its conclusion in July 2013. That series inspired multiple television anime series, a live-action film, several OVAs, and a successful line of games. It also led to a 2001 anime film and a trilogy of anime films, with the third film opening in February 2016.

Shigeno followed it with MF Ghost, which was serialized in the same magazine from September 2017 until February 2025. The 23rd and final compiled volume shipped in Japan in June 2025.

Anime Adaptations

The MF Ghost manga has received an ongoing anime adaptation. The first season premiered in October 2023, with Crunchyroll streaming it. The second season debuted on October 6, and Crunchyroll is streaming it with subtitles and an English dub. A third season began on January 1, also streamed by Crunchyroll. The anime is confirmed to get a fourth and final season.

English releases for Shigeno's prior works are available through various publishers. Tokyopop published the beginning of Initial D in North America, while Kodansha Comics and Comixology now offer the complete manga in English. Kodansha USA Publishing is also releasing the MF Ghost manga in English. The break for Subaru and Subaru is a brief intermission before the racing legend continues its weave later this fall.
