GKIDS Addresses The Last Blossom Subtitle Error, Plans
GKIDS apologized for a subtitle timing glitch during screenings of The Last Blossom film, which caused cancellations.
GKIDS has responded to a technical error that disrupted screenings of The Last Blossom anime film. The distributor confirmed it is reviewing options for makeup screenings of the corrected version.
According to a statement provided to Anime News Network, GKIDS became aware of a subtitling glitch in the film's Digital Cinema Package (DCP) on Sunday. The issue caused English subtitles to be off by several seconds. The company immediately instructed theaters to remove affected shows from sale and issue refunds.
The Response and Correction
A corrected version of the film was provided to theaters on Monday. Some venues were able to update their screenings in time, but others were not, resulting in canceled shows. GKIDS had initially planned to only screen The Last Blossom on August 30 and 31.
The company issued a public apology. "We deeply apologize for this issue and to all moviegoers affected, whether you attended a screening or had one canceled," the statement read. It added that the company brought the film to cinemas because it is "a distinctive and wonderfully original work" and expressed regret for falling short of audience expectations.
Plans for Makeup Screenings
GKIDS is now examining how to make things right for fans. The company told ANN it is "reviewing options including makeup screenings of the corrected version, to ensure audiences can experience this special film." No specific details about potential makeup screening dates or locations were provided in the source.
Cocoon Anime Unaffected
The technical problems with The Last Blossom have not impacted the upcoming release of another film. GKIDS confirmed that the theatrical release of the cocoon anime, titled cocoon, One Summer of Girlhood (cocoon Aru Natsu no Shōjo-tachi Yori), will proceed as planned.
The anime adaptation of Machiko Kyō's Cocoon manga will open in North American theaters on September 4. It will be screened in Japanese with English subtitles and with an English dub. GKIDS noted that some last-minute schedule adjustments by individual theaters are common ahead of an opening and may result in changed or added locations. The company also plans a home video release for the anime.
