Summer 2026 Anime Season Rankings Final Episode Impact
ANN reader rankings for the Summer 2026 anime season reveal how final episodes, counted twice in the scoring, reshaped the standings.

The Summer 2026 anime season rankings are based on ANN readers' ratings of individual episodes, with the final episode of each series counted twice in the cumulative ranking. These rankings only include titles legally streaming in North America that meet a minimum vote threshold, and they are computed using the Ranked Pairs method to determine relative viewer preference. A series' first episode is considered part of the season's first week for ranking purposes, even if it streamed later, and the double-weighting of the finale is designed to balance the advantage strong starters get from higher initial vote counts.
This system means the difference between the top and tenth spot can be very thin. A low ranking does not signify a bad show, only that ANN readers on average preferred the shows above it. Long-running series and sequels often have an advantage as only dedicated fans remain to rate episodes highly, though a filler arc can cause a drop. The rankings are published for entertainment and make no claims of statistical significance.
What changed in the final week
An extra ranking week was added for the period of September 23-30, 2026, to capture the last episodes of series that ended early. A 'final ep.' column shows these concluding installments, while a 'prev week change' column indicates how much a series' position shifted from its penultimate episode. For series without a new episode in a given week, the previous week's rating is used as a placeholder in the weekly graph, though it is not counted in the cumulative total. Episodes from the very tail end of the season, such as from Ascendance of a Bookworm Part 3, You and I Are Polar Opposites, and The Elusive Samurai streaming into October, are not yet included. The rankings will be updated as those episodes are reviewed and rated.
Notable series and their summer performance
The season featured a diverse mix of sequels and new releases. The romance anime Love Unseen Beneath the Clear Night Sky, following reserved student Kakeru Sorano and optimistic, visually impaired girl Koharu Fuyutsuki, was a standout. One review noted it "far surpasses other 2026 rom-coms in emotional impact, ultimately becoming a story about living life to the fullest."
Several major sequels returned. Saga of Tanya the Evil Season 2 came back after nearly a decade, focusing on strategy and psychological warfare with fluid animation, though it was criticized for skipping light novel content and a rushed finale. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 4 was seen as an improvement over prior seasons, delivering more battles and spotlighting characters like Veldora. Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 began with Eris's return before revealing a devastating secret to Rudeus, all while maintaining high animation quality. Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 4 Part 2 adapted the 'Recapture Arc' in a highly condensed form, shedding light on mysteries while adding to Subaru's trauma.
New adaptations also made waves. The Ghost in the Shell by Science Saru captured the humorous tone of the original manga with a distinct '90s style and a more expressive Major. The slice-of-life title Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You, about an overworked salaryman and a cashier, became a hit on Crunchyroll, praised for the chemistry across a generational gap. Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia, following slave girl Sitara during the Mongol Empire's expansion, featured a distinctive animation style and a detailed portrayal of the era's social structures. The rankings will be updated as the October-streaming episodes from the trailing end of the season are reviewed and rated.
