The anime adaptation of 'The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn't a Guy At All' is set to premiere on January 8, 2027. The series will open with the 1991 Nirvana song 'Breed,' a detail confirmed by the band's Dave Grohl. Studio CloverWorks and the theme song were first announced during Anime Expo in July.

Expanded voice cast revealed

Mariya Ise and Akari Kito lead the cast as Mitsuki Koga and Aya Osawa, respectively. On October 9, five new cast members were confirmed, joining the previously announced leads for the school-set romance.

Source material and production details

The anime adapts Sumiko Arai's manga, which began as a short story on Twitter between July and September 2021. It returned as a weekly web manga in April 2022 before Media Factory began print publication in April 2023. As of February 2026, four collected volumes have been released. The series has earned significant recognition, winning the Next Manga Award in the web manga category in 2023. It also ranked #2 on the 23rd annual Da Vinci 'Book of the Year' list and #2 for top manga for female readers in the 2024 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guidebook.

Masashi Ishihama directs at CloverWorks, with series composition by Rino Yamazaki and character designs by Kanna Hirayama. Kōsuke Noma and Takayuki 'Kojiro' Sasaki are composing the music. The story follows fashionable high schooler Aya, who develops a crush on a cool employee at a local CD shop, unaware it is actually her quiet female classmate, Mitsuki. The anime was officially announced in February 2025 when the manga's third collected volume was released.
