The official X account for the Seirei Gensouki - Spirit Chronicles television anime announced on Wednesday that the series is getting a third season. The announcement confirms the continuation of the adaptation based on Yuri Kitayama's light novel series, with production returning to TMS Entertainment.
Series background and production
TMS Entertainment will again animate the third season of the adventure fantasy series, also known as Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles. Osamu Yamasaki will serve as director and be in charge of series composition, while Kyoko Yufu returns as character designer and chief animation director.
The anime's first season premiered in Japan on TV Tokyo in July 2021. It also ran on BS Fuji and AT-X, streaming on ABEMA, Crunchyroll, and other services. The second season debuted in October 2024. The production team for the second season featured many returning staff members, setting a precedent for the third season's continuity.
Yasuyuki Yamazaki returned to compose the music for the second season. Both seasons consisted of 12 episodes, with the first airing in Summer 2021 and the second in Fall 2024. Crunchyroll simulcast the anime with subtitles and later released an English dub.
Source material and publishing history
The anime adapts Yuri Kitayama's light novel, which began serialization on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website in February 2014. Hobby Japan began publishing the print version with illustrations by Riv in 2015. The story was serialized on the site until October 2020, with side stories beginning on Hobby Japan's Novel Up+ website in December 2019.
The 28th volume of the light novel shipped on February 28, with the 27th volume having been released on May 22. A 28th volume is scheduled for October 9. Multiple manga adaptations exist. An adaptation by tenkla began on the Comic Fire website in October 2016 but was discontinued in February 2017 due to the artist's poor health.
Futago Minaduki launched a new manga adaptation on the Comic Fire website in July 2017. Hobby Japan published the 14th volume of this manga on August 3, with the 12th volume having gone on sale in December 2025. J-Novel Club licenses both the novels and Futago Minaduki's manga adaptation for English digital release, having licensed the manga in November 2018.
Story and character context
Author Yuri Kitayama provided a commemorative message thanking fans in Japan and overseas for their support after Season 2. The story follows Rio, who is accompanied by his mentor Celia and childhood friend Miharu. Miharu is someone Rio loved in his previous life. In Season 1, Rio swore revenge. Season 2 saw him reunited with the person he sought revenge against.
Kitayama has stated the theme of the original story is the critical importance of putting feelings into words and communicating them. Failure to do so places an unseen cost on others that accumulates and can become a source of stress. The anime's third season is set to continue the story of Rio, Celia, and Miharu as the adaptation moves forward under TMS Entertainment's production.
One fan reacted to the renewal news online. "There must be something I'm missing," komic said. "How does this get a third series? Why not? The story is good. Simple as that."
