Tokyo Film Fest to Screen 2027 Anime Ghost, Cherry
The Tokyo International Film Festival will screen several upcoming anime films in October, including Shingo Natsume's ghost, end of night and Masanao
The 39th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) has announced part of its anime lineup for this year. According to a festival press release, the event will run from October 26 to November 4 in Tokyo's Hibiya-Yurakucho-Marunouchi-Ginza area.
Several upcoming feature films will be showed in the festival's Animation Section. These include Shingo Natsume and Madhouse's new project, ghost, end of night (ghost/yoru no hate), which is scheduled for a Japanese theatrical opening on February 11, 2027. Another 2027 release, Masanao Kawajiri's original film Cherry and Virgin, will also be screened.
Animation Section Highlights
The section will also feature two films opening in late 2026. Atsushi Nishigori's original anime film Grotesqqque, previously titled Grotesque, is set to open in Japan on November 6. NOTHING NEW and director Kōhei Kadowaki's film We Are Aliens (Ware Ware wa Uchūjin) opens even sooner, on September 25.
Women Directors: Diverse Visions
A separate section titled "Women Directors: Diverse Visions" will screen three established anime films. It includes the 23rd Detective Conan anime film, Detective Conan: Fist of Blue Sapphire. The source notes this 2019 film sold 1,458,263 tickets to earn 1,886,292,700 yen (about US$16.85 million) in its first three days. By the end of that year, its total earnings reached 9.37 billion yen (about US$86.2 million). It was the seventh consecutive Detective Conan film to become the highest-grossing in the franchise.
The section will also show Gold Kingdom and Water Kingdom, the anime film adaptation of Nao Iwamoto's manga. It opened in Japan in January 2023 and earned 85,896,750 yen (about US$659,000) in its first three days. The recent anime film of Riyoko Ikeda's The Rose of Versailles manga, which opened in January 2025, will also be presented. That film earned 108,158,300 yen (about US$704,200) in its first three days.

Industry Seminars at TIFFCOM 2026
The accompanying TIFFCOM 2026 industry event will host several seminars focused on anime business. One seminar, "Japanese Animation's Global Expansion," will feature executives from The Association of Japanese Animations, Nippon Animation, and HumanMedia Inc., among others.
Another, titled Anime Co-Production Conference, Anime's New Frontier, will include panelists such as Ervin Han, co-founder and CEO of Robot Playground Media, and Taiki Sakurai, CEO of Salamander Inc. A third seminar, Japan's IP Frontier 2026: Beyond Broadcasting, will gather producers and executives from major Japanese broadcasters and industry associations like the Broadcast Program Export Association of Japan (BEAJ).
