Manga background and English release history

The dark fantasy manga is written by Kyo Shirodaira and Yuri Kimura. It was serialized in Square Enix's Monthly Shounen Gangan magazine from August 2003 to February 2007. Square Enix published the series in nine compiled volumes.

Viz Media licensed the manga for an English release under the title The Record of a Fallen Vampire. The publisher released all nine volumes between May 2008 and May 2010. The series is also available digitally through Yen Press and Square Enix's Manga UP! Global service.

Story premise and thematic elements

The story begins thousands of years ago when the powers of the vampire queen nearly destroyed the world. Humans sealed the queen away, creating thousands of fake seals to hide her true location. Her husband, Vampire King Akabara Strauss, betrayed his race and now searches endlessly for her real seal to free her.

Humans and dhampirs hunt the king to prevent the queen's release, fearing their reunion would bring global destruction. An entity known as the Black Swan complicates this eternal conflict. It inhabits a new young human girl's body every fifty years, granting her the power to destroy the vampire monarchs. This entity grows stronger with each new incarnation.

Viz Media has described the narrative as a tale of the Vampire King's tragic love and its consequences. Online, reaction to the long-awaited adaptation has been positive. One fan remarked, "A manga that ended 19 years ago is finally getting an anime? Awesome!" Another user stated, "Could be interesting, I might keep an eye on it."

The anime is scheduled to premiere in 2027.
