Fate/Extra Record Remake Sets January 28 Release Date

The remake of the PlayStation Portable game Fate/Extra finally has a release date. Aniplex revealed during Sony's State of Play livestream that Type-Moon studio BB's Fate/Extra Record will launch on January 28 for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam.
A new trailer previewed the game's story and gameplay. TYPE-MOON will also host a special program for the title on Friday at 7:00 a.m. EDT.
Editions and Content
The game will receive both a physical Limited Edition and a Digital Deluxe Edition. The physical set includes a 3-disc soundtrack, a SteelBook case, and an artbook. The digital upgrade offers an arranged background music pack, a bundle of Servant and player outfits, three additional outfit packs, a digital soundtrack, and a digital artbook.
A History of Delays
This January date follows several postponements. Fate/Extra Record was originally slated for a 2025 release before being moved to spring of this year. The project was first announced in July 2020 to mark the tenth anniversary of the original game.
Development faced further disruption when Bandai Namco Entertainment pulled out as publisher. This happened through a mutual agreement with Notes, Type-Moon's official corporate name. Type-Moon stated at the time that development would continue under a changed structure.
Key Staff Changes
A significant personnel change also impacted the project. Kazuya Nino, the game's director and planner and the director of Type-Moon studio BB, has left the studio. He cited personal reasons and stepped down from his roles on Fate/Extra Record. Nino added he is taking a break from game development due to current health concerns. He was the producer for the original Fate/Extra and worked on the first Etrian Odyssey game.
On a returning note, character designer Arco Wada is back for the remake.
The Extraverse Legacy
The original Fate/Extra game was released by Marvelous Entertainment and Type-Moon for the PSP in Japan in 2010. Aksys Games brought it to North America in November 2011. A companion game, Fate/Extra CCC, shipped in Japan in March 2013. These titles exist in an alternate science-fiction continuity of the Fate universe, often called the "Extraverse" by fans.
This setting inspired the 10-episode television anime Fate/Extra Last Encore, which aired in January 2018. Netflix began streaming it outside Japan in June of that year. A three-episode special, Fate/Extra Last Encore: Illustrias Tendōsetsu, debuted in July 2018.
Other games in this lineage include Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star, released by Marvelous in November 2016, and its enhanced version, Fate/EXTELLA LINK, which shipped in Japan in June 2018. The action RPG Fate/Samurai Remnant, launched by Koei Tecmo in September 2023, is also available worldwide.
