Fate/EXTRA Record Game Delayed to January 28

Aniplex has begun streaming the first character promotional video for the Fate/Extra Record game remake. The video highlights the character Saber, voiced by original actress Sakura Tange.

The game will launch on January 28, 2027, for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam. This follows several delays from its initially planned release in spring 2026 and an original 2025 target. Marvelous Europe will handle publishing in Europe and Australia, according to a press release.

Release Details and Editions

Two special editions for the game have been announced. A physical Limited Edition will include a 3-disc soundtrack, a SteelBook case, and an artbook. A Digital Deluxe Edition will offer an arranged BGM pack, a Servant and player outfits bundle, three additional outfit packs, a digital soundtrack, and a digital artbook.

A Troubled Development Path

The game's journey to release has been complex. Type-Moon studio BB first announced the remake in July 2020 to mark the tenth anniversary of the original Fate/Extra. Development hit a major snag when Bandai Namco Entertainment pulled out of publishing the title following a mutual agreement with Notes, Type-Moon's corporate entity. Type-Moon stated development would continue under a changed structure.

Further disruption came when director and planner Kazuya Nino left Type-Moon studio BB for personal reasons and stepped down from his role on the project. Nino cited current health concerns as the reason for his departure and stated he would be taking a break from game development. He was the producer for the original Fate/Extra and worked on the first Etrian Odyssey game.

Returning Talent and Legacy

Character designer Arco Wada is returning for the remake. The original Fate/Extra game was released by Marvelous Entertainment and Type-Moon for the PlayStation Portable in Japan in 2010, with Aksys Games bringing it to North America in November 2011. Its companion game, Fate/Extra CCC, shipped in Japan in March 2013.

These games exist in a science-fiction alternate continuity of the Fate universe, often called the "Extraverse" by fans. This setting inspired the 10-episode television anime Fate/Extra Last Encore, which aired in January 2018. Netflix began streaming it internationally that June, followed by a three-episode special in July 2018.

The Broader Extraverse

The Extraverse has seen other game releases. Marvelous released Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star for PS4 and PS Vita in November 2016, with Western releases following in 2017. An enhanced version, Fate/EXTELLA LINK, shipped in Japan in June 2018. More recently, Koei Tecmo launched the action RPG Fate/Samurai Remnant worldwide in September 2023.
