The Vermilion Mask Anime Premieres This October

The anime adaptation of the dark fantasy shonen manga The Vermilion Mask is scheduled to premiere this October. The series, known for its unconventional narrative, will follow protagonist Peru as he confronts guilt and seeks redemption.

At Anime Expo 2026, MyAnimeList spoke with the manga's editor, Taichi Kimura, and the voice actor for the lead character, Taihi Kimura. They provided insights into the series' development and the appeal of its central character. Editor Kimura recalled his initial reaction to the storyboard, saying he was "amazed at how fast-paced the story was" and noted it contained developments not normally seen in shonen manga.

An Unusual Shonen Protagonist

Peru is not a typical shonen hero. Early in the story, he commits a grave act and must grapple with the consequences, a narrative choice that sets the series apart. Editor Kimura admitted he wondered how readers would react to a protagonist who commits a crime, but emphasized that seeing Peru come to terms with his guilt makes him a character audiences want to support. Voice actor Taihi Kimura described Peru as a quiet, reserved child with a strong sense of responsibility, who tends to take too much upon himself. "I like how strong his sense of responsibility is, his feelings of, 'I have to be the one to do it,'" Kimura said.

Casting and Character Dynamics

Taihi Kimura landed the role of Peru after a swift audition process. Editor Kimura revealed that director Watanabe had already envisioned Kimura for the part, and the audition performance led to a unanimous decision. This marks Taihi Kimura's second leading anime role. The recording sessions have build a dynamic among the main cast. Editor Kimura noted that when the three lead actors-Kimura, Yamamoto (Sonah), and Ura (Moku)-stand together, their heights mirror their characters, making their interactions feel authentic.

Key Relationships and Supporting Cast

The story's core involves the evolving relationships between Peru, Sonah, and Moku. Editor Kimura explained that Peru and Sonah share a similar burden, as both are trying to atone for past sins. "Both of them are trying to make amends for what they've done, and since their circumstances are alike, both of them want to be forgiven by the other," he stated. Moku, who fights using smoke, becomes an ally who helps shoulder Peru's burdens. Kimura compared their developing partnership to the "buddy" dynamic seen in series like Demon Slayer. Another character highlighted was Totoque, described by the voice actor as a handsome but psychopathic figure who appears in the first episode.

A New Take on the Genre

By focusing on themes of guilt and redemption rather than pure power progression, the series aims to offer a relatable and empathetic experience. The production team hopes viewers will connect with Peru's journey forward from a difficult starting point. Voice actor Taihi Kimura concluded by expressing his hope that seeing Peru smile would allow others to smile with him.
