Sword Art Online Material 1: Sugary Days was Japan's top-selling light novel in August 2026. According to sales tracker Oricon Inc., the new volume sold an estimated 27,284 copies between August 3 and August 30.
Writer Reki Kawahara and artist abec's latest entry depicts the married life of protagonists Kirito and Asuna. Kadokawa published the novel on August 7. The broader Sword Art Online franchise has inspired numerous spinoffs, a multi-season TV anime, a prior film, a proposed live-action series, and a new original film titled Sword Art Online -Integral Domain- scheduled for a 2028 theatrical release.

Kirby: Mugen no Haguruma-Kiri ni Tsutsumareta Daijiken!?, a novel based on Nintendo's Kirby franchise, placed second. It sold 24,410 copies following its August 5 release from Kadokawa. The publisher had previously released another Kirby novel, Kirby and the Forgotten Land: Shooting Star Starly World Arc, on March 11.
The first part of the novel adaptation for Witch on the Holy Night ranked third with 19,560 copies sold. Seikaisha released this volume on August 27. The source material, a visual novel game by writer Kinoko Nasu and Hirokazu Koyama, is also connected to upcoming releases. An anime film adaptation is set to open in Japan on November 20. A smartphone version of the original game will launch on the same date.
